“Hey! Come here!” my bestie shouted at me. I stole the
clothes she was supposed to wear after having a bath and hid it under the couch
in the living room. She was running with a comb in her hand behind me all
around the room. We did not stop until we were extremely tired and started
sweating in the December cold. She was shouting at me for making her sweat
after her bath. After taking a shower yet again, I brought her the clothes…
That was just one small incident in our lives. My best
friend and I have been bffs for more than 15 years now! We are each 19 years
old. So one can imagine the kind of bond we share. We have always been the best
of friends. We would share the lunch that our mothers would send for us back in
the school days.
When we were children, we used to play a lot of silly pranks
on our classmates. Once we managed to tear of guavas from a tree in our school
campus and eat them. Our gardener saw that and was running after us for quite
some time. We managed to slip away through a narrow gap between two school
buildings though.
And even though we were best friends, we would always study
diligently and compete with each other. Our teachers were very proud of us and
were in complete favour of the healthy competition between us which exists up
to this day. We were also very talented in the extra-curricular activities – be
it sports or singing.
Then came the teenage years and brought with it all the
troubleshooting. We became quite self obsessed then; started taking care while
dressing up, discussed which make-up to wear when and which hairstyle to be
followed on different occasions.
There was this when we would apply make-up on each other and
click hundreds of pictures with many poses. Pouting was our favourite with
bright red lipstick on our small lips. We even ended up destroying many of our
mothers’ lipsticks and nail-paints in attempts to create the perfect blend. Then
our ears would be spanked painfully as punishment and we would sulk for hours
together.
Then again there was a day when we dressed up one of her
caretakers in a sari and made him dance to an item number. The poor man
listened and obliged to us out of his love and concern for us. We still have
that video. Oh, how we break into laughter at our stupid antics now!
But who says craziness goes away with age?
We are crazy even now. We still go up the opposite way on a
slide in a children’s park and get chased by the guards. We stand up on swings
and swing ourselves to our hearts’ content even now.
Most recently, we ended up purchasing 10 movie tickets,
although we needed just 5. The other 5, we ended up taking my driver’s help and
selling them in black. Should not mentioned this, but could not stop myself!
We would put on music at full volume in the car, roll down
the glasses and dance and shout in the car itself. People on the roads turn to
look at us thinking we are crazy. Some would even inquire with our driver if we
were drunk! But who needs alcohol when you have a crazy heart and an equally
crazy bestie.
Here’s to all those friends who have shared bonds like me
and my best friend!
Yet in all these years, one thing has been constant. We both use Dove shampoo and conditioner coincidentally as that suits our hair perfectly! We have started using the Dove soap also now.
